A police officer has suffered a broken jaw, in an incident that sparked a police chase in Waikato on Saturday.
The police say a solo officer pulled over a man on a motorbike, who assaulted the officer and broke his jaw, then fled on his bike.
Another police patrol spotted the motorbike about five kilometres away, and when its rider refused to stop, a pursuit began.
Police say the pursuit ended when the offender drove into a tavern car park and crashed into two police cars.
The offender's leg was broken in the crash.
Both the injured officer and the offender have been taken to hospital.
Police say the offender will be charged over the incident.
