One person has been killed in a head-on collision near Dannevirke.
Another was taken to Palmerston North hospital with moderate injuries.
Police say the crash happened at about 8.30pm on Friday on State Highway 2 north of Matamau.
The incident has ended police hopes of a fatality-free Labour Weekend.
For this holiday period, the speeding tolerance level has again been reduced to 4km per hour.
They did so for the first time at Queens Birthday Weekend, when one person died.
Superintendent Paula Rose, says an even better result had been hoped for this time.
