Ashburton district lags in dairy effluent compliance

Barely half the farms in Canterbury's biggest dairying area fully complied with their effluent discharge conditions in the past season.

That's revealed in Canterbury Regional Council's annual dairy report, which for the first time provides a breakdown of compliance rates for each district.

For the whole region, almost 60% of dairy farms were fully compliant with their effluent rules, a big improvement on the 43% score for the previous season.

In the Ashburton district, though, just over 51% of the 258 farms monitored achieved that.

The 184 farms checked in the Selwyn district had 57% compliance.

Those two districts between them hold more than half Canterbury's dairy farms.

The highest compliance rates were in Hurunui and Waimakariri, with more than 70% of dairy farms passing muster.
