Extra flights to land during RWC while Wellington sleeps

Dozens more early-morning flights will be landing in Wellington while the city sleeps, during next year's Rugby World Cup.

Wellington City Council has given the airport resource consent to land up to 34 planes as late as 2.30am.

The council says the extra flights are to bring local and international rugby fans back to Wellington if overnight accommodation is booked out in Auckland during the tournament.

It says nearby residents were consulted on the change, and it was agreed the noise from the early morning flights would be minor.
