Christchurch Casino won the supreme award at the Tourism Industry Awards in Auckland on Thursday night.

The casino also won the tourism workplace training award and employs almost 600 staff.

Tourism Industry Association chief executive Tim Cossar says the judges were impressed with how well the casino is run.

He says chief executive Brett Anderson, knows every employee by name and they are encouraged to to contribute their own ideas and take the initiative.

Mr Cossar says the casino has responded to the recession well and is an example to other businesses of how to operate.

Mr Anderson says the casino made a decision not to cut its training during the recession and more recently the earthquake.
