Morning Report: local papers

8:31 am on 15 October 2010

All the papers celebrate the Commonwealth Games victory by the 'Golden' Ferns.

NZ Herald

The New Zealand Herald says the netball team brought the Games to a golden conclusion, beating Australia in the most dramatic fashion possible.

In what the paper calls one of the great displays of shooting, Maria Tutaia nailed victory on the two goal rule, after the scores were deadlocked following extra time.

A new study from Otago University shows that alcohol is so affordable that it is now cheaper than bottled water.

Dominion Post

The Dominion Post says the researchers behind the alcohol report are urging the Government to reconsider its decision not to raise tax on alcohol.

Justice Minister Simon Power said the study's results are concerning, but the Government still believes its alcohol reform package strikes the right balance.

The paper describes the netball as an 'extra time thriller' and says the Indian crowd got behind New Zealand, rather than Australia.

The Press

The Press shows the jubilant Silver Ferns rushing to celebrate their 66 - 64 win.

A last-ditch campaign to save a heritage building in Christchurch could be too late, with demolition expected to start as early as Friday.

The Manchester Courts co-owner Richard Peebles and heritage supporters on Thursday traded verbal blows over whether the earthquake-damaged property should be demolished or saved.

ODT

The Otago Daily Times reports the search for a helicopter, which went missing with two people on board near Invercargill in perfect conditions on Thursday, was to resume at first light.

The alcohol research report shows it took 21 minutes in 1999 for a worker earning the average hourly wage to make enough to pay for four standard drinks.

By 2009, it took only 17 minutes and if the alcohol were cheap cask wine, it took only seven minutes.
