Fire on Wellington train

3:48 pm on 11 October 2010

Wellington's beleaguered rail network suffered further problems on Monday, with a fire on a train carriage and services delayed by mechanical faults.

The fire occured in a carriage that was travelling into Wellington from the Hutt Valley about 7.30am.

Guards used extinguishers to put out the fire before the train reached the platform at Wellington.

KiwiRail says the fire broke out in the part of a carriage that is used to carry bags and bikes.

One carriage had to be evacuated because of concerns over the amount of smoke.

Two people were treated by ambulance staff at Wellington railway station, though no one was taken to hospital.

KiwiRail spokesperson Deborah Hume says it is investigating the cause of the fire.

Mechanical faults also delayed services on the Johnsonville and Paraparaumu lines.

All services have since returned to normal.
