Blood Service suspends lab workers

8:04 pm on 8 October 2010

Strike action by laboratory workers has led to the suspension of union members at the Blood Bank in Palmerston North.

The suspensions coincide with all union members at the Palmerston North Blood Bank striking on Friday and next Monday.

Members of the Medical Laboratory Workers Union are involved in a protracted row with the New Zealand Blood Service and 13 district health boards over pay.

Of the nine staff at the Palmerston North Blood Bank, six are union members.

All six were effectively suspended on Thursday over a notice for a partial withdrawal of labour until next Thursday.

The union members also called a full strike on Friday at the Palmerston North Blood Bank with a follow-up next Monday.

The Blood Service says blood supplies to Palmerston North Hospital and private hospitals in Manawatu have not been affected because has brought in staff from other centres.
