Baby's body discovered, pair appear in court

A man and a woman have appeared in the Wellington District Court charged with disposing of the dead body of a child with intent to conceal its birth.

The body of a new-born boy was discovered buried at a property in the Wellington suburb of Churton Park.

The pair, both 21, were granted interim name suppression when they appeared in court on Wednesday. Police confirmed one of accused is the boy's mother.

The woman cried quietly as she stood in the dock, clutching a tissue in her hand. She was remanded to a psychiatric facility until later in October. Police have confirmed she is the boy's mother.

The man, who stared at the ground throughout his court appearance, has been granted bail on strict conditions and will also reappear later this month.

Police say they were alerted to the burial late on Tuesday night by someone who lived in the house where the body was found.

Officers and forensic scientists spent the day at the scene and removed the boy's body on Wednesday afternoon. A post-mortem is scheduled for Thursday.

Police still cannot say exactly how old the baby was, though they have confirmed he was buried on Tuesday afternoon.

Officers are conducting background inquiries and checks on those who live at the house.
