Burmester defends title on opening day

New Zealand athletes will compete in 10 sports on the opening day of the Commonwealth Games, with swimmer Moss Burmester leading the charge.

Burmester, 29, on Monday defends the 200 metre butterfly title he won in Melbourne four years ago.

Swimming New Zealand high performance manager Jan Cameron

says Burmester is a medal contender, though he may not win gold this time.

Burmester is one of eight New Zealand swimmers in the pool on Monday.

The Silver Ferns open the defence of their netball title against Papua New Guinea during the day, while the womens hockey team play Wales.

New Zealanders are also competing in tennis, table tennis, squash, lawn bowls, gymnastics, badminton and archery.
