12:12 pm on 1 October 2010

KiwiRail says it cannot yet tell rail commuters in Wellington when services to the Kapiti Coast will be restored - but hopes it will be sometime this weekend.

Two trains which collided near Plimmerton on Thursday afternoon after a slip have been removed, but the line is still blocked by another slip.

Services from Plimmerton to Wellington resumed on Friday morning - but KiwiRail apologises for a scarcity of buses to handle morning commuters.

KiwiRail says it trying to get as many buses as it can, but peak times arewhen they are also most in demand elsewhere.

People wanting to get as far as Paraparaumu can catch a train to Plimmerton - and take a bus the rest of the way.

Train services to Palmerston North, including the Overlander, remain suspended, but a bus service is available.

Police advise people to expect road congestion between Pukerua Bay and McKays Crossing on Friday evening.

Meanwhile, trains have resumed on the Johnsonville line.
