'Common sense' lifting of schoolboy haka ban

6:31 pm on 27 September 2010

Northland Labour list MP Kelvin Davis says common sense has prevailed with the lifting of a ban on the haka at a schoolboy rugby tournament in Cambridge this week.

The Rugby Union organisers of the annual Auckland Roller Mills tournament forbade the haka being performed on the field, saying it had caused fights in the past.

But Mr Davis says that after widespread protest by the provincial teams who compete, the organisers have relaxed the ban.

He says intermediate-age rugby teams routinely do the haka without incident before games in the provinces.
