Games athletes want assurances they will be safe

The New Zealand Athletes Federation says many Commonwealth Games athletes are waiting for assurances they will be safe at the Games in India.

Federation head Rob Nichol, says the fact that the athletes village and other facilities in Delhi are not finished yet, is of less importance than questions over security.

He says the police in Delhi are trialling security plans this week under the scrutiny of international officials, including members of the New Zealand Olympics Committee.

New Zealand officials will meet on Friday to discuss whether they are satisfied with security arrangements.

However, Mr Nichol says even if they give the go-ahead, some athletes may decide not to go.
