High flows on Waikato and Waipa Rivers

River levels are expected to remain high on the Waikato and Waipa Rivers for the next few weeks because of recent rain.

Waikato Regional Council says the high level of Lake Taupo, which feeds the Waikato River, is also a factor.

The council says it's working closely with Mighty River Power to manage water flows through its eight hydro dams on the river.

The council says its flood management system is expected to cope, but there is some flooding near lakes and rivers and some ponding on farm land.
