Three people who were taken to Southland hospital on Saturday night after a house fire in Invercargill, have been discharged.

The Fire Service was called to the house in Eye street just after 8.30pm and left about 2am on Sunday.

A boy aged two years, a girl, 16, and a man, 26, were taken to hospital for treatment for smoke inhalation.

Senior station officer Graeme Gilroy says the flames were at least 10 metres high and the house is severely damaged.

He says the fire appears to have started in the same room as the child and does not look suspicious, but the cause will be investigated.
