The number of public transport journeys in Auckland in the past year was higher than at any time since 1974.

Auckland Regional Transport Authority says there were just over 60 million trips in the year to last month.

Chairman Rabin Rabindran says rail has seen a 11.5% increase on the previous 12 months and travel by train has doubled in the last five years patronage figures.

Buses still account for almost four in five public transport journeys in Auckland.

An express bus service, which uses dedicated bus lanes alongside the northern motorway, has recorded a 20% increase.
