Elderly woman's killer appeals against conviction

2:30 pm on 31 July 2010

A man convicted of the murder of an elderly woman found beaten and left for dead in her wardrobe is appealing against his conviction.

Olinale Ah You was sentenced in June to life imprisonment for the murder of 80-year-old Yan Ping Yang in her South Auckland home in 2008, a murder the sentencing judge called callous and brutal.

The Court of Appeal says the 30-year-old father of two is appealing against his conviction and sentence, which includes a minimum non-parole period of 20 years.

During his trial, Crown prosecutors said Ah You attacked Mrs Yang during a robbery, breaking all of her ribs and stomping on her.

Ah You apologised during his sentencing but Mrs Yang's family said they couldn't accept the apology.

A date has not yet been set for the appeal to be heard.
