Major diversion for Napier-Gisborne motorists

2:45 pm on 17 July 2010

Motorists travelling on State Highway 2 between Napier and Gisborne are facing disruption over the next three weekends, due to a road closure.

Starting on Saturday, 17 July, bridge sections are being lifted into place as part of a $30 million realignment to bypass the Matahorua Gorge, north of Napier.

Transport Agency spokesperson Mark Kinvig says the highway is being closed from 7am to 6pm each each Saturday and Sunday for three weekends, to allow the work to take place.

Drivers will have to take an 8km kilometre detour along Matahorua Road, he says, which is narrow, winding and only partially sealed.

Further weekend closures of the highway are planned in October and November.
