Heavy rain on the way

8:04 pm on 4 July 2010

Foul weather is on the way for many parts of the North Island this week.

Severe rain warnings are in force for Coromandel and Bay of Plenty.

MetService says up to 80mm could fall in the ranges of the Coromandel Peninsula and western Bay of Plenty from Sunday evening through to Monday afternoon.

Heavy rain is then expected to spread to the Gisborne region with up to 300mm falling in the hills and ranges and up to 150mm in lower areas including Gisborne, before midnight Tuesday.

Weather ambassador Bob McDavitt says as well as the rain there will be gales in Auckland, Coromandel and the lee of the Kaimai range on Sunday evening through to Monday morning.

Mr McDavitt says it is a large, slow moving winter depression that is bringing the wind and rain.

With many people on the road because of school holidays, MetService says drivers should exercise extreme caution.

Meanwhile, the weather is expected to move south to Gisborne and Hawke's Bay and continue until Wednesday.
