Local government reform in the Whangarei region could save millions of dollars a year, a report commissioned by the district council says.
Whangarei District Council commissioned a report from accounting firm Deloitte showing potential savings that could follow the creation of one or two unitary authorities in the region.
Deloitte says the creation of a single unitary authority in the north could generate savings of $9.7 million a year, based on the supposition that 36 jobs would disappear in the amalgamation of the region's councils.
It says if two unitary authorities were formed - as the councils want - the net result would be similar.
