The Fire Service is praising a rescuer who saved a man's life when he dragged him from a burning house in Rotorua.
The emergency services were called to a fire at a bedsit on the corner of James St and Elizabeth St, near the centre of Rotorua, at just before 8pm on Saturday.
Cameron Hughes says he was down the road visiting a friend when he smelt the fire.
He says he went to check it out, and when he saw there was someone inside the burning house he kicked the door down and dragged the man to safety.
The Fire Service says the rescued man was taken to hospital, suffering from smoke inhalation.
The cause of the fire, which destroyed the house, is being investigated.
