Reinvestment of traffic camera fines sought

12:02 pm on 5 June 2010

An Auckland city councillor wants the Government and transport authorities to reach a final decision on how the city uses its red-light traffic cameras.

Three cameras have been rotated between 10 sites since 2008 in a pilot programme.

A report last year showed an average 43% drop in people running red lights.

No further cameras will be installed while an evaluation is considered by the Transport Agency, police and the Transport Ministry.

The council's transport committee chair, Ken Baguley, has previously argued that fines should be used to pay for more cameras. He says there's popular support for reinvesting the money in road safety.

The current cameras cost $800,000 to buy and install.
