New co-ordinated centre for abuse victims in Manukau

Police have unveiled what they describe as a one-stop shop for victims of child and sexual abuse in Counties Manukau.

The multi-agency centre is designed to co-ordinate the services of police, Child Youth and Family and the district health board under one roof.

Among the facility's features are child-friendly interview rooms, a play area where psychologists can observe young victims and a medical forensic centre.

The project is the idea of Detective Inspector John Tims, who says the centre will be of considerable benefit to everyone involved.

Because it's not a police station, he says, it has the added benefit of there being no risk of victims running into their attackers there.
