Motorcyclists say new SH1 toll unfair

Some motorcyclists in Auckland say a new charge for using the Northern Gateway toll road is unfair.

From Tuesday, the Transport Agency will charge bikers $2 a trip to use the stretch of highway north of Orewa.

It says the charge is a matter of fairness, and they can use alternative routes if they want to avoid paying.

However, Auckland Motorcycle Club secretary Phil Bagshaw says it is not fair to charge the same amount for bikes as for three-tonne trucks.

He says the Transport Agency should be encouraging the use of environmentally friendly vehicles such as motorcycles.
