Dance workshop at marae

6:50 am on 18 May 2010

The future of dance may be on at the pa. Contemporary dancers Taane Mete and Taiaroa Royal are running a workshop on a Hawkes Bay marae on Tuesday for up to 40 rangatahi.

The pair performed their autobiographical work Tama Maa at the Hawke's Bay Opera House on Monday night.

Mr Mete, from Ngati Koroki, says they're concerned at the lack of young Maori coming through to Dance School and hope to inspire them by taking work back to the provinces.

Waatea News reports Mr Mete left his Napier home more than two decades ago.

Tama Maa was developed for the Tempo Dance Festival in Auckland in 2008.

Mr Mete says it's an autobiographical work, showing the transition from boyhood to manhood, and allows them to show the skills they've mastered.

He says parts of the piece have been taken to a dance festival in

the United States, and they will tour it to Australia later this year.
