Council proposes time limit on Sunday parking

8:28 pm on 13 May 2010

The Wellington City Council is considering imposing a two-hour time limit on free parking in the central city on Sundays.

Parking spaces that are metered from Monday to Friday would allow only two hours of free parking between 8am and 6pm.

The council says 3,400 parking spaces are affected and estimates imposing the time limit would raise $19,000 a year in parking fines.

Wellington mayor Kerry Prendergast says retailers and shop assistants who park all day in front of their premises are discouraging people from shopping on Sundays.

Public consultation on the proposal closes on 30 June.
