Sand bags being removed

6:01 am on 8 May 2010

A clean-up of the central business district in Queenstown begins on Saturday, now that the threat of flooding appears to be over.

Thirty five shops had to be evacuated last week because of a rise in the level of Lake Wakatipu. Sandbags and flood protection barriers were erected.

However, despite more rain on Friday morning, the lake is still 10cm below the flood level.

Queenstown Mayor Clive Geddes says council staff will clear the central business district of sand bags on Saturday.

More heavy rain is forecast for next week. Businesses will be given the option of retaining sandbags, so they're prepared.
