Pensioners urge council not to increase rents

More than 150 pensioners have urged Waitakere City Council not to increase the rent on their council flats.

The Voice for Fair Rents group says a proposal before the council would raise rents by 5%, an increase of about $18 per week for 500 pensioners.

The group says many pensioners are struggling to survive, with one woman resorting to living on her funeral expenses.

Chair Frank Broomfield says dozens of tenants met councillors on Friday to tell them they could not afford the rises.

Deputy mayor Penny Hulse says the proposed rental increases were to cover the increased costs of maintaining the flats.

But she says the council will now have to consider whether there are other ways it can deal with increased costs.
