Name suppression has been lifted for the man accused of murdering an elderly Hokitika man and his intellectually disabled grandson.

Jeffrey Frost, 41, is the neighbour of Frank Schist, who was shot dead along with his grandson Andrew Hutchison in the Schist family home.

Mr Frost had lived next door to Mr Schist for many years on the main road into Hokitika.

Police say he shot and killed Mr Schist, 86, and Mr Hutchison, 23, on 6 April but will not reveal what they believe sparked the incident.

A rifle was found at the Schist house, where the two men died.

Mr Frost was charged with Mr Schist's murder the day the bodies were discovered.

He made his first appearance in relation to the murder of Mr Hutchison in Greymouth District Court on Tuesday.

Sergeant Mark Harris says Mr Frost will remain in custody until a psychiatric report has been completed.
