The Wellington regional health board is considering legal action against a Maori trust board to recover more than half a million dollars in health funding.

Capital and Coast District Health Board is investigating Te Runanga O Te Ati Awa Ki Whakarongotai in Waikanae over allegations it misused $590,000 granted to its health service, Hora Te Pai.

A DHB spokesperson says it requested written evidence from the Runanga of how it intended to pay the money back by last Friday.

It is understood the board received a response from one of the two factions representing the Runanga.
