Bid to stop free train rides in Auckland

7:47 pm on 15 April 2010

Free rides for those who don't purchase tickets on the rail network in Auckland may soon be over.

The Auckland Regional Transport Authority says 8% of passengers avoid buying a train ticket, costing about $1.5 million per year in revenue.

After feedback from paying customers, the agency said decided to crack down on ticket cheats.

All tickets will be checked at Britomart on 27-28 April with additional random checks to follow.
