Waka expert Hoturoa Kerr is confident the crews of four double-hulled voyaging waka will be ready to head for Tahiti after a few more months training.
Waatea News reports the fibreglass vessels underwent trials on the Waitemata harbour last weekend.
Mr Kerr, the head of Te Wananga O Aotearoa's waka culture course, says crew members come from Vanuatu, the Cook Islands, Samoa, Fiji and Aotearoa. He says they are a good mix of experienced sailors and others looking to increase their experience.
