The Police say it is likely a man who disappeared while rowing on a Central Otago lake has drowned.

The 70-year old's rowing boat was found overturned on Lake Dunstan at about 8.30am on Saturday.

Searches of the water and the shoreline have been unsuccessful.

The police say the search is now in a recovery phase, and the missing man's family are being supported.

A Police dive squad arrived at the lake at around 7pm on Saturday, and may resume the search on Sunday morning.
