Forest fire hot spots being checked

6:37 am on 28 February 2010

Hot spots at the scene of a forest fire near Dunedin are to be examined on Sunday morning by helicopters fitted with infrared heat detection cameras.

Dunedin City Council principal rural fire officer Graeme Still says infrared cameras can best detect hot spots early in the morning when the soil is cool.

The blaze at Mount Allan has been burning since Tuesday and firefighters believed they had finally contained it on Saturday night. It has covered 820 hectares.
