Tenants to face lower rent increase

9:08 am on 27 February 2010

The Council of Social Services is pleased tenants in Christchurch will face a lower than expected rent increase this year.

Christchurch City Council raised rents by 14% last year and intended to increase them by almost another 6% this year.

But the council has reduced this year's increase to 4.3%, after saving $200,000 in its housing maintenance contract. It has 2500 housing units.

The Council of Social Services says the city council has acted with integrity, but some tenants will still struggle with the increase.
