Fire snarls up traffic around St Lukes mall

Fire safety officers are investigating what caused a blaze in a commercial building in the Auckland suburb of Mt Albert.

At the height of the fire more than 20 appliances were in attendance and a decontamination unit was set up as a precaution against any chemicals in the building, occupied by Modus Architectural Lighting.

The fire occurred opposite one of the city's largest shopping centres, St Lukes, and caused significant traffic congestion in the area.

Auckland courier driver Krishneel Kumar, who was one of the first on the scene, says the owner of the business initially did not believe him when he called to say it was on fire.
