Gale warnings were in place on Wednesday for many parts of Hawke's Bay and Wairarapa.
MetService said exposed places between Havelock North and Eketahuna would get wind gusts of 120 km/h until late Wednesday afternoon.
The forecaster said trees and powerlines could be damaged and driving conditions may be difficult.
