Inexperienced kayakers keep rescue services busy

8:18 am on 27 December 2009

After 11 kayakers had to be rescued in Wellington harbour in under two days, maritime police are urging kayakers to keep an eye on the weather, and to understand their limitations.

Once incident required the assistance of the police launch, the coastguard boat, the Westpac Rescue Helicopter, and police patrol staff.

Constable Andrew Cox from the Wellington Police Maritime Unit says a further two kayakers had to be convinced not to head out in windy conditions, even after they saw the police returning four kayakers to land.

He says inexperience, and a lack of understanding of the weather and sea conditions, have led to the callouts.
