A man has appeared in Christchurch District Court over the robbery and serious assault of an 85-year-old woman.

Patricia Burrows remains in hospital after being mugged in the Barrington Mall car park three weeks ago.

The police, backed by the armed offenders squad and dogs, arrested a man, 35, early on Wednesday morning.

He appeared in court on Wednesday afternoon charged with robbing Mrs Burrows of her handbag, containing $110, and causing her grevious bodily harm.

Judge Colin Doherty remanded him in custody without plea until Thursday morning.

He also granted him name suppression until then.

The unemployed man also faced three other unrelated charges for receiving stolen property, stealing thousands of dollars worth of equipment and the attempted theft of a car.

The police have praised members of the public for their help in tracking down the alleged offender.
