A man has been airlifted to Wellington Hospital following an accident aboard a fishing boat in Cook Strait.

The Dunedin man, 34, was pinned and knocked unconscious by fishing gear, including chains, that fell on his chest sometime before 6pm on Wednesday.

The vessel headed for Port Underwood in the Marlborough Sounds, where it was met by a rescue helicopter.

A Wellington Free Ambulance paramedic, Mark Bailey, says the man is in a serious condition, with throat, chest and back injuries.
