Thousands of people are taking part in the Lake Taupo Cycle Challenge in the central North Island this weekend.
A spokesperson for the event, Clare Ponton, says 11,000 cyclists were expected to take part in 12 events - close to a record number.
Ms Ponton says the competing cyclists travel the circumference of Lake Taupo.
