Firefighters have brought under control a large factory fire in the Auckland suburb of Penrose.

At the height of the blaze, 23 fire crews were at the Laminex Group's panel manufacturing plant on the corner of O'Rorke Rd and Station Rd in Penrose, which was severely damaged by the blaze.

The Fire Service says there was asbestos in the building.

The fire broke out about 2am on Thursday, and has since been contained. The cause is being investigated.
