South Taranaki is expecting hundreds of cyclists to turn up for the annual Hawera pushbike pub crawl. No liquor ban will be enforced.
The South Taranaki council voted against a liquor ban for the event, held on the last Saturday before Christmas, means drinking en-route can continue.
District mayor Ross Dunlop says there's no law against drinking while cycling, and the council was concerned that a liquor ban might lead to ugly situations if police were heavy-handed.
A "group of young blokes" started the event about 25 or 30 years ago, he says, but there's no organiser these days - people just turn up.
Mr Dunlop says he expects between 1600 and 2000 people to take part this year.
