Northland police say they are investigating the discovery of a human skull in sand dunes near Dargaville.

The skull was found two weeks ago by Australian tourists walking on the beach at Glinks Gully.

Inspector Paul Dimery says the skull appears to be have been in the dunes for some time, but it's not known if it is pre-European, or of more recent origin.

He says the skull has been handed to a pathologist for testing.
