A man is in Waikato Hospital with serious injuries after being thrown from the bonnet of a speeding car before being run over, police say.

Claude Street in Hamilton East was cordoned off about 6.30pm on Saturday after reports of a man clinging to the bonnet of a white four-door sedan.

Senior Sergeant Jeff Penno says after the man fell from the vehicle, the car came to a stop on top of him before the driver reversed over the man and sped off.

Mr Penno says the vehicle has since been seized and one person has been taken into custody.
