Wellington City Council insists its plans to become a carbon neutral city have not fallen by the wayside, despite a new push to also become the country's first Fair Trade City.
In 2007, the council embarked on a path to become a green city and ensure its operations are carbon neutral by 2012.
Greenpeace is criticising the council for its lack of visible action on that policy, when it has now announced it also has plans to become Fair Trade-certified.
One councillor, Celia Wade Brown, says the price of carbon credits is not stable enough and the goal of a carbon neutral city will not happen by the 2012 deadline.
She says the focus has shifted from carbon neutrality to emissions reduction.
