Resource consent review too late, says mayor

Far North mayor Wayne Brown believes a Government review of his council's consent process is too late to be of any use.

Environment Minister Nick Smith has launched an investigation under the Resource Management Act after a survey found only 37% of Far North resource consents are being processed within the statutory time limit.

Mr Brown, a developer, says there were lengthy delays in the development boom years of 2005 to 2007, which is one reason he ran for mayor.

He says the delays have now been resolved and figures in September show 98% of resource consents were processed in time.

Mr Brown says if the Government wants to foster development and cut red-tape, it should investigate its Department of Building and Housing.

He says the Far North council sends the department $500,000 a year and gets no discernible benefit.
