Council to finance domestic solar hot water systems

8:36 am on 20 October 2009

Nelson City Council has launched a scheme to finance the installation of 1700 solar hot water systems in homes.

The council intends to spend $9 million over four years in a move it says will save residents $500,000 annually in electricity costs.

Residents won't pay anything upfront, but will repay the cost to the council over 10 years.

The Energy Efficiency & Conservation Authority says the system could become a New Zealand model.
