'Purchase licence' suggested for drinkers

7:29 pm on 15 October 2009

People who cause trouble while drinking could earn demerit points and be banned from buying alcohol, under a proposal by the Southland District Youth Council.

The teenage councillors are suggesting that people should carry a "purchase licence" to buy liquor, which they could lose for a time if convicted of alcohol-related offences.

A Southland District Council spokesperson says its staff have been asked to investigate the proposal.

And it may be included in the council's submission on proposed changes to the Sale of Liquor Act and its own local alcohol policy.

A police spokesperson says existing identification checks are sufficient, provided bouncers and bar staff do them properly.
