Building consents are on the rise again in Whangarei. Consents were up in September for the third consecutive month.

The Whangarei District Council says consent numbers hit their lowest point of the recession in January.

However, the council approved 139 building projects in September - the highest number this year. About a quarter of the consents were for new homes.

The council says requests for LIM reports - usually a sign of real estate activity - also rose in September by 60%.
